WW2 German Field Telephone Equipment… Crossing Roads With Field Telephone Wire

When laying field telephone wire, how do you cross a roadway so that vehicles don’t snag and pull them down? Well, Nachrichtentruppen would use interlocking wooden rods to bridge the roadway.

To make the bridge, six rods were needed: four long and two extension (short). The long rods had a pointed fitting on one end and a tapered interlocking fitting on the other. The short rods had an interlocking fitting on both ends.

The bottom long rods went into the ground, pointed end first. The other end end of the lower long rod was interlocked with a sort rod. The other end of the sort rod was interlocked with the upper long rod. The three interlocked rods formed an extra long rod with sufficient height to clear the road.

To stabilize the three interlocked rods, anchor ropes were attached to the pointed top of each interlocked rod. Field telephone wire was then attached to each top.
