WW2 German Field Telephone Equipment… Line Construction – Part 4

Field telephone line construction (Leitungsbau) is described in Luftwaffe training publication L. DIV. 419/7a, Nachrichtenteschnichs Merkblatt, Section A. Leitungsbau. Now, let’s continue looking at some illustrations from this publication. This part of the publication addresses constructing double lines (two wires).

In review, single lines with ground return was used near battle lines where there was a strong possibility that phone conversations could be tapped into by the enemy. Using single lines was cheaper and made enemy eaves dropping more difficult, but call quality could suffer, especially if ground conditions were poor. Away from battle lines, double lines were typically used.

Figure 10. Double field telephone line construction on a straight line with poles. The poles are spaced about 50 meters apart. The field telephone lines are spaced about 25 centimeters apart at the tops of the poles.

Figure 11. Where the lines make a 90-degree turn.

Figure 12. Pole anchored to support straight lines.

Figure 13. Attaching the lines before the pole is put into the ground.

Figure 14. Holding the pole before burying in the ground and anchoring.

Figure 15. Crossing a road. When crossing roads, pole extension pieces are used to bring the height above the road to a minimum of 4.5 meters.

That wraps up the review of Luftwaffe training publication L. DIV. 419/7a, Nachrichtenteschnichs Merkblatt, Section A. Leitungsbau.
