WW2 German Field Telephone Equipment… Line Construction – Part 1

Field telephone line construction (Leitungsbau) involves the basic use of specialized tools, namely the back pack wire dispenser (Rückentrage) and wire forks (Drahtgabelen).

Preferably, the wire is suspended from trees out of reach of unauthorized peronnel and above vehicle traffic. As the wire is dispensed from the back pack spools, it is put in the trees with the wire forks.

Where there are no trees, special poles are used to suspend the wire. These poles come in varying lengths and lock together to make longer poles. The part of the pole that goes into the ground has a pointed, cone-shaped end. A locking means is on the other end. This cone-shaped end is also used at the top of locked together poles.

In Part 2, we will begin looking at some illustrations from Luftwaffe training publication L. DIV. 419/7a, Nachrichtenteschnichs Merkblatt, Section A. Leitungsbau.
